Adoption

Adoption procedure

How does adopting a puppy work?

Before a puppy comes to the Netherlands, the Puppy Rescue Team Foundation and its animal protectors abroad always try to find out as much as possible about the character and background of the puppies. All puppies that come to the Netherlands first go to a veterinarian abroad. . They receive a chip, are vaccinated, flea and dewormed and receive a European passport. The puppies are then taken to the Netherlands by special transport to go to a foster family or be adopted directly. The adoption rate for 2023 is € 500.00 including a safety package consisting of a leash and a safety harness.

These rates are only compensation for:

the care and food during their stay in Italy/Greece or Spain the medical checks blood tests and any treatments the required vaccinations including rabies the chip and its insertion the European passport the transport to the Netherlands

It goes without saying that all the money goes to rescue puppies and their mothers in Italy, Spain and Greece, among others.

How can you respond to a dog?

If you have seen the nicest, sweetest or most beautiful puppy on our website and what suits you best, it is best to contact us via our contact form or send an email with your telephone number and answers to the questions below:

What we would like to know is:

what will the dog's life be like for you? family composition and ages other pets experience with dogs working hours walking times where should he sleep holidays how long should the animal be alone fenced garden

If you have indicated that you are interested in a puppy, you will be contacted by telephone by one of our volunteers. In this intake interview you will:

Other your wishes and living situation will be discussed and we will tell you as much as possible about the puppy. When both parties are sure that the puppy in question is a good one

If there is a match, a home visit will be arranged. Due to the current Corona circumstances, we temporarily do this via a video call.

Do you have a question?

We are happy to help you!

And then further...

The puppy may already be in the Netherlands or still abroad. If the puppy is already in the Netherlands, you can visit the host family and meet it for the first time after a conversation with the foundation contact person. We do ask you to think carefully about it at home before you bring the puppy into your home. That is why we have a rule that the puppy never immediately comes with you during the first meeting with the host family.

If there is a click and the host family also thinks it is a good match, a purchase agreement will be drawn up and sent, which you will complete and sign, and you will transfer the amount of € 500.00 to the foundation. A date and time will then be agreed when you can pick up the puppy from the host family. This collection of the dog/puppy must take place within a week after introduction, as we do not want to keep the host families occupied for an unnecessarily long time.

If the puppy is still abroad and you want to adopt him or her, we will try to bring the puppy to the Netherlands as quickly as possible. When booking a puppy, we require an advance payment of €100.00. A dog is a commitment of many years and this reservation is an extra security for both you as an adopter and for us as a foundation. You can be sure that the dog you choose will be definitively reserved for you, and we will receive the signal from you that you are making a well-considered decision. We hope that this will separate people who are seriously interested and people who, no matter how well-intentioned, react too impulsively to a dog, and unfortunately come back to it. If you cancel the puppy, no refund of the reservation amount is possible. We create a Whats app group for each arrival in which we indicate the time of arrival. Through this group we will also keep in touch with each other for a longer period of time about the puppies and you can also ask us any questions there. This group also includes rescuers as standard, and they are happy to tell you everything about your puppy during the time they stayed with them.

Note:

Stg. Puppy Rescue Team does not have its own shelter or kennels in the Netherlands. Stg. Puppy Rescue Team supports the shelters in the country of origin.

Aftercare

Once you have picked up your new housemate from a host family, the contact person you spoke to will contact you several times in the first few weeks. You can then contact her with your questions and discuss how things are going together.

The aftercare staff of the Puppy Rescue Team Foundation will contact you again after some time by email or telephone to see how your new pet is doing in his/her new home. In this way, the Puppy Rescue team always tries to give you the opportunity to ask questions and we can also monitor the well-being of the puppy.

Mandatory safety harness

The Puppy Rescue Team Foundation provides good and safe anti-escape safety harnesses for all puppies we mediate. As you read in the manual, puppies are still very sensitive to unknown things in the first period. They are easily startled by unexpected things. They need time to acclimatize to their new living situation, their new environment and all the new sounds and other stimuli.

We would like to prevent escapes of the puppies we have mediated.

Our policy is therefore that every puppy goes home through us wearing the safety harness!

The Puppy Rescue Team Foundation orders these harnesses itself as soon as the adoption is approved.

These safety harnesses are made especially for us, according to our safety requirements. When the puppy arrives in the Netherlands, the puppy will be given the harness, collar and leash before it is handed over to you in accordance with our safety regulations.

There are generally two types of dog harnesses. One is a so-called entry-level model that comes together like a figure of eight on top of the dog's shoulder blades. A dog can escape from this if it shoots back perpendicular to the person holding the leash. The other type of harness looks like a tilted letter H on the dog's shoulder blades and goes over the dog's head to put it on and encloses the dog's forequarters. The best experiences have been gained with this. Naturally, just like a collar, a harness must fit well and not be too loose and it must have an extra lock to lock the closure. We use harnesses of this model ourselves, but with an extra strap around the belly. This harness is 100% escape proof.

Don't buy a puppy because it is so cute, or for the children, but make an informed decision. After all, it is a commitment for perhaps fifteen years!!

Adopting an animal is a serious, life-changing step that should be carefully considered. Caring for an animal takes time, money and dedication - is it the right decision for you?

It's a decision that could change your life for the next 10 to 15 years. There are of course the initial adoption costs, but you also need to take into account all the following costs: food and care, vet bills, babysitting/kennel fees and insurance. If you work full time, don't get a dog!! Dogs are intelligent pack animals and cannot be alone for hours.

Remember that you are your dog's companion as much as he or she is yours. The dog will need to be walked every day, rain or shine, and at regular intervals. You will need to make trips to the vet and of course work on socialization and interaction with other dogs and people. The whole family should enjoy the training and everyone should be committed to taking responsibility for the dog.
